Joel Simon

Founder and editor here at Beginner Gardening Tips
Joel’s love for plants was well nurtured from the most appropriate setting: surrounded by indoor plants as a child. He remembers fondly watering them with his family and closely observing each plant’s reaction to care and attention.
Soon, he found himself trying to work with his own plants, learning skills like transplanting, propagating, and even cloning houseplants. These early experiences sparked a curiosity that would shape his lifelong journey with plants.
One pivotal moment stands out from his childhood: when he was about 10 years old, Joel decided to see if he could grow an orange tree from a seed. He pulled the seed out of a store-bought orange and began a science experiment that would become part of a school project.
Weeks of nursing, testing, and waiting finally paid off when a seed sprouted-a minor victory that planted the seed in his mind for growing things from scratch.
As Joel grew older, his gardening ambitions expanded. From assisting friends and family in the establishment of lush botanical gardens to designing productive food gardens, he found satisfaction in sharing knowledge and lending a hand.
From setting up raised garden beds to troubleshooting pest problems, and even finding perfect companion plants, Joel developed into a trusted source of guidance in his community.
Indeed, over time, Joel started having a deep interest in how people used to garden, including traditional and historical garden methods.
Through conversations with fellow more seasoned gardeners, Joel learned about old-world methods of farming and botanical ways which emphasize sustainability and harmony with nature.
These discoveries inspired him to integrate time-tested methods with modern gardening tools, creating a holistic approach that he now teaches through his blog.
After years of hands-on gardening and thousands of conversations with plant enthusiasts, Joel created Beginner Gardening Tips to help others build their green spaces.
His goal is straightforward: to make gardening approachable, fun, and rewarding for anyone, from houseplants to vegetable gardens and turning your backyard into a botanical oasis.
Through this blog, Joel shares personal stories, practical advice, and step-by-step tutorials. He now combines years of experience with an ardent desire to share and hopes that others will find the same joy in gardening that he has enjoyed for many years.

- Food Gardening – Helping friends and family develop a thriving vegetable garden through strategies for seasonal planting, soil enrichment, and pest management.
- Botanical Gardening – Creating flower gardens that are colorful, balanced, and biodiverse to provide a habitat for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
- Sustainable Practices – Composting, conserving water, and using organic methods of gardening to ensure successful gardens while being kind to the environment.
- Indoor Gardening – Keeping houseplants lush, from easy-to-grow pathos to more finicky flowers like orchids, and how to provide the right light, humidity, and propagation for them.
